After his release from prison, Yoshida Shōin was placed under house arrest at his father’s residence. The Mōri clan showed leniency, allowing him to move freely within the grounds, so despite the house areest restrictions, he resumed teaching and established the Shōkasonjuku Academy on the property.

After his release from prison, Yoshida Shōin was placed under house arrest at his father’s residence. The Mōri clan showed leniency, allowing him to move freely within the grounds, so despite the house areest restrictions, he resumed teaching and established the Shōkasonjuku Academy on the property. Over two years, he mentored a new generation of thinkers, many of whom would play pivotal roles in the end of the Tokugawa Bakufu (see details) and the transition to the Meiji era.
