Zaike Castle (Mikawa)
Zaikejō was a fortified residence site in the village of Zaike, Okazaki Municipality. No ruins remain, and the site is now housing.
History
Zaikejō was the fortified residence of Ishikawa Shigemasa. Yōrakuji, a temple in the north of the village with the honourific mountain name 'Ishikawa', contains cenotaphs for the Ishikawa Clan.
There is a story that in 1564 during the Mikawa-Ikkō-Ikki uprising, Tokugawa Ieyasu temporarily hid himself at Zaikejō, taking shelter in the fort's gatehouse. Probably the 'yashikimon (屋敷門)' referred to at Zaikejō here was a nagayamon (長屋門, rowhouse-gatehouse), a type of gate with rooms, usually for guardsmen.
