History

It seems Fushimi Castle was never destined to have a successful life. The original Fushimi Castle was founded in 1594 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Just one year later it was destroyed in a great earthquake. Hideyoshi commanded another castle to be built near this location. He died a couple years after its completion. Tokugawa Ieyasu then moved into the castle which was destroyed in a battle before the battle of Sekigahara. He rebuilt the castle again only to have it dismantled as a part of his own one castle per country laws. Some of the buildings, yagura, and stone walls were repurposed to other castles and temples around the area including Fukuyama Castle, Yodo Castle and Osaka Castle.

Field Notes

The castle & museum is now closed but the park is easily accessible. The overgrown structures with weeds and vines gives it a rustic historic look. Unfortunately this is nowhere near the original site of the main keep, which is now Imperial Property. This could be a really amazing site. There are a number of great stone works hidden in the woods fenced off for Imperial Property. I only hope they open more of them up some day, at least for some special tours. You can find some traces of stonework or relocated stones of the castle around the area. See pictures below for details. Many of the structures from this castle have been moved to other temples and castles around Japan. These photos have been put into separate galleries below by location. You should also refer to the Fushimi Castle Relocated Structures page for summary overview of all those listed on this site.
