Fushimi Castle - Akazunomon

不明門

Akazunomon literally means "the unopened gate" - supposedly it was never opened at Fushimi Castle and the tradition continues today. This very ornate gate was moved from Fushimi Castle to the Nanzenji Temple complex. A portion of the temple was turned into a villa during the Meiji Period and is now the private property of a ryokan inn. Many people walk past it with barely a glance on their way from the bus stop to Nanzenji, but as you walk the neighborhood or drive/ride by it definitely sticks out as being exceptionally unique in the neighborhood. They should really put up a sign.
