History

The Numatashi Dejiro was a satellite fortification of Kumagawa Castle. See Kumagawa Castle for details.

Field Notes

This satellite fortification is a bit tricky to find. There are several hiking trails that criss cross the nearby mountains but they are not well mapped nor signposted for anyone unfamiliar with the area. The route I took] seems to be the most common for those who specifically want to visit this castle. After passing through a gate across the forestry trail into the mountains you can mostly follow this road but there are a few side roads and trails that also split off along the way. If I did not have a good map and GPS with me I probably would have taken one of the wrong roads and gotten lost. Fortunately, I found the site well enough. The correct section of forestry road comes to a dead end which is the farthest reach of the castle. Just follow the ridge line down and over until you see the first horikiri trench.

There is a long trail that also loops around to connect up with Kumagawa Castle but instead of risking it, I just took the same route back to the main road and through the town to reach the main road into Kumagawa Castle. I heard that there are plans to better develop this trail for hikers and castle visitors.
