Miidera is located along the shores of Lake Biwa at the base of one of the old passes to Kyoto over the Higashiyama Mountain Range. The large main gate, called Daimon or Niomon, was originally constructed at Jorakuji Temple in Konan, Shiga. It was moved to Fushimi Castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and eventually donated to Miidera by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1601.
