I have not heard any news lately about what is going on there other than plans are in the works to preserve the site. I hope they do some more excavations and open them up to more people soon. As far as I know, the development plans have been permanently frozen and the city and company are just working out the details of a handover. The company will take some losses even, but they seem quite amicable about it. It's amazing in this age that historical preservation won o...)

My wife and I went there on the first day of a two-day special viewing of the excavated site in mid-February 2024. I hope the Shiga Prefectural government and Otsu City will find a way to buy back the land from a property developer and turn the site into a protected park, so castle fans can have the opportunity to see this part of...)

It's the Nara equivalent of Kannonji Castle in Shiga but with almost entirely earthwork ruins. A lot of work has been done on this mountaintop castle ruin in recent years to make it easier to navigate the site with more signposts and the installation of metal staircases leading up and down some of the steeper kirigishi running down the side of some of the baileys. I think many castle fans only know of the five UNESCO World Heritage listed gusukus, Nakagusuku, Nakijin, Katsuren, Shuri, and Zakimi. Actually, Okinawa is a fertile hunting ground for castle fans with many worthwhile gusuku ruins to explore. Formerly this part of Toyota Municipality was part of Asuke Municipality which was merged into Toyota when it expanded. Asuke Municipality included various townships with downtown Asuke at its core. Really enjoyed it--I'm loving this castle more and more! A few things that stood out: The Sanjikken Nagaya's renovation is finished, and it was open to visitors. Really beautiful inside! It's a seriously cool castle, better than I expected. It was a Sunday and the Tsukimi Yagura was open on all three floors, and I think that really enhanced it for me. I revisited Marugame Castle later in the day, and it struck me how similar the tenshu of that castle is with the Tsukimi Yagura inside. It contains two relocated gates from two different castles. The temple's south gate is said to originally have been a gate used at Matsusaka Castle in Matsusaka Municipality, and the temple's front gate is said to have been originally built at Tamaru Castle in Tamaki Township, Watarai County. Meiwa Township lists this latter, grander of the two gates as a cultural property. Tenrinji is itself a nice local temple.)

The ruins of the castle primarily feature glorious ishigaki (stone-piled ramparts) which remain remarkably well preserved throughout much of the castle grounds. Well, it's a mogi-heavy site with virtually no actual ruins to speak of.
