History

Sendajō was constructed by Senda Chikakiyo circa 1220. In 1553, Senda Nobuchika, a vassal of Murakami Yoshikiyo, was defeated by Takeda forces at the battle of Uedahara; following the retreat of the Murakami to Echigo, Sendajō was abandoned.

However, Senda Nobuchika was able to reclaim his ancestral castle in 1582 following Uesugi Kagekatsu's re-conquest of the area; by then he was surely an old man. It's not known when the castle was abandoned for good, but it would've been no later than 1598 when the Uesugi were transferred to Aiźu by kampaku (regent) Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Sendajō, at its peak, had a layered structure with multiple baileys. The main bailey measured 101m east-west and 76m north-south. The fortress in its entirety measured 454m east-west and 378m north-south. The fort had an unusual pentagonal layout, with a defensive ditch on four of its sides.
