Background

Yoshida Shoin was released from prison and placed under house arrest here at his XX residence, so it is technically their residence. He resumed teaching and built the Shoka Sonjuku school on the residence property. The Mori was lenient in allowing him to move freely about the property and over two years teaching at the Shoka Sonjuku Academy he mentored a new generation of thinkers. See Bakumatsu for more details of his influence on the Hagi and the end of the Edo Period. The photos below include both the school and the residence where he was under house arrest.
