Field Notes
Daikan'yashikijō is the tsumeshiro (fortified redoubt) of the Daikan-yashiki in Ônuma Township, Toyota Municipality. It is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin featuring a main bailey, terracing and trenches, as well as some remnant masonry. There are two horikiri (trenches). One is a small horikiri which cuts through a ridge to the east. The larger horikiri is longer and deeper, cutting through the mountainside to the site's rear in the north. Beneath the main bailey to the south the mountainside is terraced. About two stages down, there is a fairly deep lateral excavation of the hillside creating almost vertical embankments which struck me as surely having been quite labour-intensive to hollow out if it was for the medieval fort.
