Sūkōdō (Iga, Mie) 崇広堂 [三重県伊賀市]

The Sūkōdō is a surviving hankō (samurai school) adjacent to Iga-Uenojō. It was established in 1821 as a branch school of the Yūzōkan, the Tsu-hankō established by Tōdō Takasawa. Sūkōdō refers to the school's main hall as well as the whole site. The extant structures are many and date to the 1860s as the original structures were destroyed in a fire in 1854. The school's footprint was originally much larger, but only the central part has remained, with modern school facilities being built around it. The Sūkōdō served as a library for much of modern times. It is now open to the public as a national historic site. Iga yakimono, pottery for which Iga is known, is showcased and sold here.
