As far as I can tell, it's mostly concentrated in the area in and around the Honmaru, but that area is really beautiful. Also, the reconstructed gate is great. I did wander around the park looking for most extant stonework, and I found some quite old-looking stonework along a certain path, plus some other traces here and there, but unless I'm missing something (quite possible), there isn't a hu...)

The honmaru is now cleared as the neighbouring primary school is closed (but the building is being kept for posterity). I really liked the terraced hillside with the 9 to 10 bands of ishigaki. Lots of info about the castle is available in english from the tourist information center at the station. They have a big banner of a mitsudomoe now at the castle entrance which can be seen from the train. I saw a cruise ship shaped like a castle...)

I have not heard any news lately about what is going on there other than plans are in the works to preserve the site. I hope they do some more excavations and open them up to more people soon. As far as I know, the development plans have been permanently frozen and the city and company are just working out the details of a handover. The company will take some losses even, but they seem quite amicable about it. It's amazing in this age that historical preservation won o...)

My wife and I went there on the first day of a two-day special viewing of the excavated site in mid-February 2024. I hope the Shiga Prefectural government and Otsu City will find a way to buy back the land from a property developer and turn the site into a protected park, so castle fans can have the opportunity to see this part of...)
