The main baileys are laid out on a very long north-south ridge, and as Raymond mentions below, there are sub-baileys on the side of the ridge. I definitely recommend the advice about getting maps, as I think that I would have missed a lot without them. That said, there are some places on the map that are currently inaccessible. If you treat it as a ruin, it's surely one of the best castle ruins in Japan. A word of warning: Shingū's local falcon population has turned into a flock of urban pests. They now use their sharp talons to swoop down on unsuspecting tourists to snatch food out of their hands. I'd never seen anything like it. I lost a tart to one when I was lunching in the garden of the Xú Fú temple. It was completed in 1854. The location of Matsumae Castle on the Southwesternmost tip of Hokkaido was a vital point for controlling the passage between Hokkaido and Honshu. Eric was just urging us to take proper precautions, but in my memory’s retelling it sort of sounded like... “Kumajō. This site is dangerous. If you lose your footing you will fall down a ridge and die. If you do not have a bear bell you will get mauled by a bear and die. If you are inexperienced you will make a mistake and die. The last one is about this castle, its importance and destruction and the tragic end of the Takeda family. It made me very sad. I just saw this chapter of this great website. Unfortunately, I did not manage to enter into the main tower but I had the chance to explore the castle grounds and loved the tranquillity it accorded. The castle sits atop a small hit and from its fortifications is a very nice vista of the town. On the grounds also stands a statue of Tokugawa Isyasu, commemorating the fact that the Shogun spent 17 years there engaging in some of his most well known battles.)
